Working with me
How do I know if I need therapy?
You may feel stuck, disconnected, overwhelmed or out of control. Of course, we all feel like this at certain points in life, but if you feel that your progress is being held back by the way you feel or your life circumstances, therapy could help.
Sometimes people wonder whether their concerns are ‘serious’ enough or ‘bad’ enough for therapy. You are the only person who can decide this, based on how you feel. Therapy is not just a place to focus on your issues or problems, it can be a space where you can really connect with yourself, with the support of a qualified professional.
Giving yourself this space and time – which is just for you – can be transformative. Through the therapeutic relationship, you can develop deeper self-awareness, compassion and resilience.
What will happen in my first therapy session?
We will start simply: I’ll invite you to tell me about yourself. You can start wherever feels most relevant for you right now. I’ll explain my approach to therapy and how I feel I could support you.
What will happen after my first therapy session?
During our first two sessions, I’ll usually ask you to tell me what’s led you to seek therapy, and what you feel you need support with. We treat these first two sessions as an extended consultation, where you will experience how I work and we can decide together if we feel we are a good fit as therapist and client. If we’re not the right fit, I’ll support you to find another therapist, and try to suggest other therapists within my network who may be better suited.
If we decide to continue, in the following sessions, we’ll begin to discuss your thoughts, feelings, experiences, dreams, and challenges, with openness and curiosity.
How long does therapy last?
I work on an open-ended basis, meaning we have no set end date in mind for therapy. Working in this way means we can go at a pace which feels comfortable for you, and we can explore all aspects of your life without feeling limited by time.
How often should I have therapy?
Sessions last for 50 minutes each time and are typically once a week. Therapy is most effective when there is regularity and continuity. For this reason, I’m unable to provide less frequent or ad-hoc sessions.
How do I know if therapy is working?
In psychodynamic therapy, we do not usually set goals or have defined outcomes. The benefits of therapy will be felt over time, often in the form of better self-awareness, emotional regulation, self-compassion and the ability to set boundaries in your life with confidence.
